Transfer von Grundlagenwissen in Anwendungen - Ergebnisse aus einer Untersuchung der IGF-Fördervariante CLUSTER

The article discusses public promotion of the interface between basic and applied research by analyzing the experience with so-called “CLUSTER”-projects in the promotion of industrial collective research in Germany. CLUSTERprojects combine basic research projects funded by the DFG with precompetitive applied research projects funded by the IGF. We find that (i) combining basic and applied research requires a substantial effort in the generation of the projects, (ii) leads to substantially higher impulses into the scientific community, (iii) helps business firms especially to gain an understanding of technological requirements for future products and processes and (iv) eliminate barriers to innovations that are usually not recognized by the actors.
