The “Climate and Development Policy” department investigates the nexus of poverty alleviation, environmental challenges and migration dynamics in the Global South. We analyze climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies and how these strategies can sustain quality of life and enhance prosperity. Migration is a key strategy here, both as a response to a changing environment and differing economic opportunities across regions. A regional focus of our research is on Sub-Sahara Africa. In cooperation with an international network of research partners, we employ rigorous empirical methods to study applied research questions. We combine randomized and non-randomized study designs, mostly based on primary and, hence, unique data – always informed by profound field-based knowledge.
