Since receiving his doctorate in 2019 from Ruhr University Bochum, Gerhard Kussel heads the staff of the Executive Board at RWI. The staff supports the Executive Board in the strategic and administrative management of the institute.

In addition, Mr. Kussel works as a postdoc in the competence area "Environment and Resources", where he manages projects ranging from data collection and analysis to communicating the results to decision-makers and the interested public.

Until 2019 he worked as an assistant to the board and as a PhD student in the area of "Environment and Resources". He was also a research associate at the Ruhr-University Bochum, where he was responsible for research, teaching and administration of the Chair of Economic Policy and Applied Econometrics. During his studies of economics at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster he worked as an assistant and later as a research associate for various chairs.

In his research he investigates the energy consumption behavior of private households as well as their adaptation to climate change and related policy measures. He has published in refereed journals such as The Energy Journal and Ecological Economics. His work has been awarded the RWI Junior Prize and the Theodor-Wessels-Prize of the EWI Cologne.
