Boris Augurzky studied economics and mathematics at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He finished his Ph.D. in econometrics in 2000. Between 2001 and 2003 he worked as a consultant at The Boston Consulting Group in Germany with a special focus on the financial services industry and risk management issues. Since 2003, Boris Augurzky is chief of the health economics department at RWI. Additionally, since 2007 he is managing partner of the Institute for Health Care Business GmbH (hcb). From 2014 to 2019 he was scientific CEO, since 2019 he is CEO of the Rhoen Foundation. In 2016 he was appointed professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Furthermore, he is a member of the committee for health economics of the Verein für Socialpolitik (German Economic Association), of the advisory board of the German Managed Care Association (BMC), of the Initiative Qualitätsmedizin (IQM) and of the scientific institute of BARMER. He is a member of the editorial board "Krankenhaus-Report" of the AOK Research Institute (WIdO) and of the Council for Health and Medical Ethics of the diocese of Essen as well.

His research focus is on the in-patient sector (hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation), on health insurances, and in general on reforming the health system. Among other things, he is the author of the annual Hospital Rating Report.
