Profile

Friederike Hertweck, PhD, has been a researcher at RWI since October 2020. Since July 2025, she is leading the junior research group CAM4transfo that looks at the interplay between students, universities, and the major transformational changes (demography, digitization, decarbonisation).

Friederike received her Master of Science in Economics from the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and completed her doctorate at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in Italy on topics in the Economics of Higher Education. During her PhD, she visited the University of Bamberg and the University of Southampton. Friederike Hertweck is accredited by the Office for National Statistics to work with sensitive British individual data. She was a fellow (now alumna) of the Joachim Herz Foundation since 20222 and participated in the 2024/25 cohort of the Leibniz Mentoring program for outstanding female scientists.

Her research concentrates on educational transitions and the institutional design of the higher education sector with a focus on how institutional settings affect equal opportunities. She works primarily empirically with administrative data from various European countries. In addition, she also collects data in field experiments in school and university contexts.
