Attitudes towards transport policy measures in Germany: results from a Survey of 2018

In many cities, car traffic has become a substantial burden. To strengthen the alternatives to car traffic, there are numerous proposals, such as increasing the number of bike lanes, if necessary at the cost of car traffic. This article presents the mixed results of a survey on the attitudes towards such proposals, conducted among almost 7,000 German household heads in 2018. On the one hand, a majority of 69% of the respondents is in favor of the designation of lanes reserved for buses on dust-loaded roads and just under half is in favor of driving bans for vehicles that exceed the limit values for pollutants. On the other hand, a large share of 57.3% of the respondents is against higher costs for parking in city centers, and slightly half reject a ban on vehicles with internal combustion engines as of 2035.
