Krankenhausprivatisierung in Deutschland und ihre Effekte
From its beginning in the early 1990s, the privatization of hospitals has been controversial. In order to objectify the debate, the RWI has published the factbook „Importance of Hospitals in Private Ownership.“ The aim was to analyse whether is a conflict between the intention to make profit on the one hand and safeguarding hospital care on the other hand. To this end, detailed empirical analyses were performed for the factbook, which are presented in this article in excerpts, supplemented by up to date analyses from the Hospital Rating Report 2013. Based on selected indicators such as efficiency, profitability and investment capacity, participation in medical care and medical quality, the article outlines how private hospitals fi t into the picture. The analyses are limited to empirically observable factors of hospital privatization. Therefore, only a fraction of all possible factors can be looked into.
