Die wirtschaftliche Lage der Krankenhäuser
Based on a sample of 546 annual reports, we analyze the economic situation of German hospitals. In 2006/2007 some 16 % of the hospitals displayed a serious probability of experiencing insolvency. While this share substantially increased in 2008, we expect it to decline to some 15 % in 2009, partly due to the fiscal stimulus package. In the long run, however, we expect the probability of insolvencies to rise significantly if the situation is not rescued by a sizeable productivity growth or by market consolidation.
