REGIONAL INEQUALITY

Individual choice of residential location promotes social separation/segregation. If done according to ethnicity or qualification level, residential decisions can reinforce social inequality. Such inequality between regions and neighborhoods has been used as an explanation for the rise of populist parties or politicians in recent years. Regional inequality or equivalent living conditions include not only earnings and income, but also personal perceptions of upward mobility, affiliation and perceptions of problems in politics.

The FDZ Ruhr analyzes the development of regional inequality and segregation, especially the impact of regional inequality on election results.
