Covid-19 as amplifier of social inequality- SMall ARea Analyses with German neighborhood Data (SMARAGD)
In this project, we aim to investigate the role of socially
disadvantaged neighborhoods in the spread of the Covid 19 pandemic. Individuals in low-income neighborhoods are often assumed to have limited opportunities to avoid contact with other (potentially infected) people. This may be due to a poorer
housing situation (e.g., more people living in smaller spaces) or workplaces that do not provide the opportunity to work from home. However, small-scale diaggregated data for Germany is missing. Already available data at the county and city level are not sufficient for this purpose, as there are clear indications of disparencies of infection rates within cities. In this project, we aim to fill this gap by
collecting the relevant small-scale data. These data will provide the basis for building empirical evidence to
understanding how pandemics operate in the context of social inequality.
