Leistungen und Erlöse von Krankenhäusern in der Corona-Krise

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed new challenges for the German hospitals since spring 2020. Due to the uncertainty regarding the number of expected COVID-19 cases, hospitals were instructed to keep capacities free and expand intensive care capacities from mid-March 2020. This paper evaluates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on German hospitals' performance and examines whether the compensation payments (in effect since March 16, 2020) were able to compensate for hospitals' revenue reductions. The decline in the number of cases varied widely around the average of -20% for the indications considered. However, the compensation payments were able to compensate, on average, for the resulting revenue reductions of DRG-hospitals.
