Sieg der Defensive? Evidenz für die 1. Deutsche Fußball-Liga

Based on data on the games of the 1. German Football League originating from six seasons, among which are two seasons immediately before the introduction of the Three-Point Rule in the season 1995/1996 and two seasons right after, this article provides a descriptive analysis of the inter-temporal development of a variety of indicators of playing styles. Above all, the decrease in the average number of shots on the goal may suggest a more defensive playing style nowadays than in the 1990s. Our fixed- and random-effects estimations on the probability to win a game indicate, though, that home victories are not less probable today than in the two seasons before the introduction of the Three-Point Rule, the probability of away victories is even statistically significantly higher in the seasons 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 than in the 1990s.
