Der Fall Nokia — Versagen der Marktwirtschaft oder Wettbewerbsschwäche der Region?

At the beginning of 2008, the announcement of the Finnish Nokia Corporation to close its manufacturing plant in Bochum at short notice provoked a discussion about the raison d’être of regional subsidies and about corporate social responsibility. Between 1995 and 2007, Nokia had received substantial regional policy subsidies by the German authorities. All emotions aside, this plant closure gives reason to intensify ongoing efforts to upgrade the competitive position of the Ruhr region as a business location, particularly by improving the research and education infrastructure.
