RESEARCH DATA MANAGEMENT

Here you will find an overview and further information about the FDZ Ruhr's support services for research data management.

Research data search

The current state of research is the basis for one's own research, which is why the state of knowledge and data on a topic must be researched in advance. Existing research data sets can be reused for one's own analyses, if necessary, which is why it is worthwhile to conduct detailed research, which can take place in various ways. In the following, different possibilities to find re-usable research data for own research questions are shown. When re-using data, the respective licensing must always be observed and appropriate referencing must be carried out.

Data offerings of the research data centers

  • About the Data offer of the FDZ Ruhr, data are stored either as Scientific Use Files or in the context of a guest research stay in the Secure Room of the FDZ Ruhr under these Terms of use provided.

  • da|ra, the registration agency for social and economic data offers an access to the Data offer of (most of) the FDZs accredited by the RatSWD, but also beyond.

  • The Data offer of the federal statistical offices can be searched thematically. The Conditions on the use of data are regulated by law.

Data portals and index services

Data portals and index services enable searching across multiple data repositories:

  • GesisDataSearch is the BETA version of a search service based on up-to-date metadata obtained from research data collections worldwide.

  • OpenGeoEdu is a project funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure to promote the use of open geodata.

  • GovData provides uniform, central access to administrative data from the federal, state and local governments.

Data journals or data citations in journal articles

In data journals, articles are published in which data sets and methods are merely described but not interpreted. Here, particularly relevant data sets or those with a high degree of complexity are described. In a data journal, the data set itself is the research result and not the interpretations derived from it, as is usually the case. The aim of data journals is to increase the transparency and visibility of research data in order to make them more comprehensible and easier to find for subsequent use.

The particular advantage of these data descriptions is that they undergo a peer review process and thus meet a high quality standard. The data described in the article are thereby only linked to the article and are published separately, for example in a data repository or a research data center. Data journals are published as an online medium and access is via restricted or open access.

You can find data journals within the following lists:
