Media reports, xenophobic attacks, and their impact on local labor markets and regional migration
Against the background of rising xenophobia in the context of the large inflow of refugees to Germany in 2015, the aim of the research project is to analyze the role of the local media in shaping anti-foreign attitudes and xenophobic attacks. In addition, we investigate the consequences of xenophobic attacks for the affected regions. In particular, we analyze whether regions that experienced major xenophobic events see larger out-migration and lower in-migration. Against the background of rising skill shortages, we further investigate whether firms in affected reasons have larger difficulties in filling their open vacancies.
