Editorial Special issue: Viability of renewable energies: regional considerations

The rapid evolution of renewable energy technologies is said to hold great potential for meeting one of the most pressing challenges confronting the 21st century: the attainment of energy security and mitigation of climate change via environmentally benign production methods. But with an increasing number of countries launching ambitious programmes and landmark legislation to increase the output of renewable energies, the debate concerning the economic, environmental and energy benefits remains highly contentious. Aside from the fundamental question of whether the manufacture of renewables is cost effective, additional questions pertaining to sustainability and regional development have yet to be solved.
