RESEARCH DATA MANAGEMENT

Here you will find an overview and further information about the FDZ Ruhr's support services for research data management.

Data collection

Every data collection and processing should contain detailed documentation of the process steps, as this is the only way to ensure the traceability of research results. Appropriate documentation is part of good scientific practice.

Without documentation you run the risk of:

  • not being able to find data again,
  • no longer being able to trace the origin of data,
  • not being able to interpret data because of missing contextual information,
  • confuse files (outdated or competing versions),
  • not being able to exchange data with other people or merge it with data from other sources.

To ensure appropriate documentation, the FDZ Ruhr offers researchers at RWI a template for a data collection concept. The data collection concept contains information and metadata that are required for the documentation of your research. If you are planning a survey, please feel free to contact our research data manager.

Informed consent

An essential prerequisite for the collection and processing of personal data for research purposes is informed consent. Personal data always exist if the collected data have a reference to a natural person. According to Art. 4 No. 1 General Data Protection Regulation, this is any information relating to an identified or identifiable individual.

Examples of research data with personal references:

  • Name of subjects
  • E-mail address
  • Address or telephone number
  • Genetic or biometric data
  • Health data
  • Student registration number
  • Usernames on online platforms or other online identifiers

Examples of research data without personal reference:

  • Measurement data from the natural sciences (for example astronomy, geosciences or materials sciences)
  • Genome of animals or plants

The RatSWD (Council for Social and Economic Data) offers recommendations and sample consent forms on the topic of "informed consent". Further advice and downloads on informed consent can be found at https://www.forschungsdaten-bildung.de/einwilligung.
