The preliminary estimate for the Container Throughput Index of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (RWI) and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) for April stands at 117.7, slightly lower than the figure of March (117.8).

The Container Throughput Index of RWI and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) has fallen considerably from a revised 119.7 to 117.8. However, the current tendency is unclear because the already high flash forecast for February was revised upwards by one index point.

The German economy is experiencing a moderate upturn. Gross domestic product is expected to increase by 1.6 percent this year and by 1.5 percent in 2017. The upturn will be driven by private consumption, which will benefit from continued employment growth, sizeable increases in wage and transfer income and purchasing power gains thanks to lower energy prices.

In February, the Container Throughput Index of RWI/ISL has improved from (revised) 117.9 to 118.7. However, the Chinese New Year’s Holidays have had their usual distorting impact on the February-flash estimate. Hence analysing the 2-month-average paints a more realistic picture. In January, the RWI/ISL Container Throughput Index recorded a strong growth, climbing from a 119.1 (revised) to 120.7 points. While this is a strong increase, it should be interpreted carefully because of the impact of the Chinese New Year holidays.

During December, the RWI/ISL Container Throughput Index improved once more, climbing from a revised 118.0 to 118.8. As was assumed due to the comparatively small previous sample size for November 2015, the flash estimated was revised upwards significantly. Thus the positive outlook is now pronounced more clearly.

During September, the negative trend that the RWI/ISL-Container Throughput-Index has been subject to since roughly one year continued. The index declined from a (revised) 117.3 points in August 2015 to 117.2 points in September 2015, thus indicating an extraordinary weak phase in global trade in manufactures.
