The relevance of the private sector for the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations can hardly be overstated. On the one hand, decisions of multinational companies are extremely consequential; on the other hand, these companies can partially evade national or European regulation. FNG evaluates instruments such as the European Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and national environmental taxes with regard to their effects on investment, productivity and innovation. The research group incorporates its analytical findings into its policy advisory activities - for example, when it comes to the design of a mechanism to prevent industrial relocation and the associated carbon leakage as a result of European climate policy.
