The research project described in this report on the “Effects of the statutory minimum wage on wages and working hours” aims to evaluate the increase in the minimum wage to €12 in terms of changes in wages, wage distribution, and working hours. The project was carried out jointly by the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IAW) and the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research on behalf of the Minimum Wage Commission. Using various methods, the IAW-RWI study concludes that the sizeable increase in the minimum wage led to a significant increase in both hourly and monthly earnings and to a reduction in wage inequality in the lower wage segment. The results also indicate that the large increase in the minimum wage led to evasive reactions in the form of reductions in working hours and a decline in the overall volume of work. Together with reports from other economic research institutes, the study served as the basis for the Minimum Wage Commission's Fifth Report on the Effects of the Statutory Minimum Wage.
