Germany aims at a complete overhaul of its energy supply system by 2050 wants to base its future electricity generation almost completely on renewables. Successful implementation of the so-called “Energiewende” will be determined by the development of the necessary technical solutions and the creation of an appropriate regulatory frame-work. An efficient energy policy sets the right incentives for the huge investments that are required from the private sector and thereby ensures that the transition to sustainable energy is both financially viable and acceptable to all sectors of society. The article presents the policy recommendations that were elaborated in a project of acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering. It stresses the fact that all national measures implemented by Germany must be integrated into the energy policy framework of the European Union and that, after all, the “Energiewende” will be judged as a success only if it contributes significantly to the global combat against climate change.
