Project

Berufe der Zukunft im Ruhrgebiet

The project aims to answer five research questions: First, which occupations have good future prospects against the background of digitalisation and of the ecological transformation of the economy? Second, to what extent are these future occupations already well-developed? Third, how is the level of demand for work developing in the occupations of the future and to what extent are digital and green skills in demand? Fourth, what role do university training and dual education play for the expected labor supply in the occupations of the future? Fifth, what developments can be expected in the future against this background?

In answering these questions, we adopt a comparative perspective, whereby the Ruhr region is compared with four other German metropolitan regions. The study answers the aforementioned research questions on the basis of a broad database. This includes official statistics from the Federal Employment Agency on the employment status and training activities as well as online job advertisements, which enable a detailed analysis of labor demand at the regional and occupational level.
