Making toll data available for research
On behalf of the federal government, Toll Collect GmbH continuously collects high-resolution location and vehicle data from lorries via the toll system. This unique data source offers significant potential for scientific analysis of traffic flows, route selection and origin-destination relationships — areas that have received little research attention in Germany to date. The project aims to develop an initial project-specific data governance framework that will serve as a model for long-term data access for the entire scientific community. This framework will be developed in response to specific scientific research questions. The project combines Bert Leerkamp’s expertise in transport science with the extensive experience of the FDZ Ruhr in processing process-generated corporate data. Additionally, Kerstin Schneider, as chair of the RatSWD, will provide advisory support on the legal aspects of using research data.
