Missing Women and Angry Young Men: Exploring the Roots of and Remedies to Conflict in Gender-Imbalanced Societies (MARRIed)
This project studies the causes of conflict in gender-imbalanced societies and the potential policy response. The projects’s focus is on understanding the role of the marriage market as driver of conflict in this context. The work is motivated by the longstanding idea that societies with too many men, particularly young and single men – the so-called ‘bare branches’ – have a built-in tendency for vice, risk taking and violence, ultimately threatening social order and stability (Hudson, 2002, 2004). The geographic focus of this project is on sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia – two of the world regions, where gender imbalances in the marriage market are particularly notable.
