RWI-UNI-SUBJECTS: Complete records of all subjects across German HEIs (1971 - 1996)

The RWI-UNI-SUBJECTS dataset is the first comprehensive collection of study opportunities offered by German higher education institutions between 1971 and 1996. It is based on annual study guides published by the German Federal Employment Agency to support high school students in their educational decision-making. Using a custom-developed computer vision algorithm, the data was extracted and subsequently enriched with administrative codes for fields of study, institutions, and districts. This enhancement enables integration with other key datasets such as social security data, official student statistics, and the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). Covering 105,307 study programs, the dataset provides a valuable resource for interdisciplinary research on education, innovation, and economic development, highlighting the pivotal role of higher education in shaping human capital and fostering technological and societal progress.
The data set are available free of charge for scientific purposes as a Scientific Use File (SUF) Off-site. For information on data access, please follow this link.
