The publication covers the results of the accompanying evaluation of the sixth civil aviation research program (LuFo-VI) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK). LuFo-VI funded research and technology projects in the field of civil aviation between 2020 and 2024. The aim of the program was to improve the technological basis of aviation research in Germany. To this end, the program addressed existing market imperfections resulting from specific characteristics of the innovation system in the field of aviation research in Germany. The evaluation was based on the existing evaluation plan and used a triangulation of methods, i.e., different stakeholder perspectives, data sources, and analysis strategies (qualitative and quantitative) were taken into account and interlinked in the evaluation design. Various survey and evaluation methods were used. For example, econometric comparative group analyses were carried out, as well as technological case studies using process tracing. The evaluation assignment covered the period from the date the contract was awarded on January 31, 2023, to the submission of the final report to the EU Commission on June 30, 2024.
