Inflation and the Sustainability of Municipal Public Debt
This project examines the financial situation of municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia and identifies systematic differences between municipalities with and without “old debts.” In a second step, the study examines how the current rise in inflation is affecting the most important inflows and outflows and uses scenario calculations to determine the magnitude of the effect. Finally, options for action for over-indebted municipalities are discussed.
