European Science Foundation (ESF) Exploratory Workshop: Boxing or Dancing? The Changing Role of Unions in Europe in Light of the Financial Crisis

The workshop aims at gaining an understanding of the diverse situation of unions in Europe and analysing the different roles, strategic orientation and actions of unions in the aftermath of the financial and economic crisis. Unions are facing the chance to revive and reinvent themselves. Unions have to decide which side to take on globalization and hence, whether unions will stand their ground as leading labor market actors remains an open question. The workshop will bring together outstanding researchers from different disciplines, especially economics, with a shared interest in the topic of the role of unions in Europe. We pursue the elaboration of innovative methods for analyzing the effects of the financial crisis and institutional changes on unions. The aspired long-term outcome of the workshop is to form an unbiased research network of union scientists to assure a continuous interchange of research on the new challenges for the labour movement in Europe.
