According to IT.NRW (2025), around half of the final energy consumption in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2022 was accounted for by private households (26%) and transport (25%). Households use ener-gy primarily for space heating and hot water, but also for lighting their homes, cooking, and operat-ing electrical appliances. In the transport sector, energy sources are used almost exclusively to gen-erate mechanical energy for vehicle propulsion. This study differentiates between the final energy consumption of private households and the transport sector in North Rhine-Westphalia according to energy applications for the year 2022. Methodologically, the project builds on the application balances for Germany, which the RWI has been compiling for several years on behalf of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Energiebilanzen e.V. (AGEB) for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK). This ensures that the results of this study are comparable with the application balances for Germany.
