Ausländische Direktinvestitionen und regionaler Strukturwandel
Foreign direct investment (FDI) is a sign of successful international economic integration. However, there is little research available on the regional economic significance of companies that receive FDI. Using the Ruhr region as an example, we examine to what extent FDI can support the economic transformation of a region subject to structural change. We draw on microdata from company balance sheets to show that foreign investments play a considerable role in the consolidation of established industries such as the chemical industry and the healthcare sector and support the economic diversification of the Ruhr region.
