Social networks and migration in Senegal

With increasing variability in temperatures and rainfall, climate migration is on the rise in Sub-Saharan Africa. This project aims to systematically document migration patterns in Senegal, a country highly vulnerable to climate change, and investigates facilitators and frictions of migration decisions and behaviors. Of particular interest is the role of social networks for migration. The project uses primary data collected in 145 villages in 2022. The data collection consists of a full enumeration of households in all villages (10,000 households), each household’s social network in the village and past migration behavior of their residents. In addition, individual-level data about climate change and migration beliefs, perceptions and behavior are being collected for a focus sample of 4,300 participants.
